Daisy The Darling Donkey Crochet Pattern

Materials:
  • Red Heart Super Saver Yarn in Buff, Black and Lavender
  • Size H Crochet Hook
  • Poly-fil Stuffing
  • 2 – 10 or 12 mm black plastic safety eyes with fasteners
  • Yarn needle

Abbreviations:
  • Ch = Chain
  • SC = Single Crochet
  • SC DEC = Single Crochet Decrease
  • HDC = Half Double Crochet
  • DC = Double Crochet
  • TRC = Treble Crochet
  • Sl St= Slip Stitch

Head

Round 1: Starting with the buff yarn and a magic ring, ch 1, 6 sc in ring. Pull tail to tighten ring. (6 sc)

Round 2: 2 SC in each st around. (12 sc)

Round 3: * 1 sc in the first st, 2 sc in the next st *. Repeat from * to * around. (18 sc)

Round 4 & 5: 1 sc in each st around. Fasten off, weave in ends. (18 sc)

Round 6: Join the lavender yarn. * 1 sc in each of the 1st 2 sts, 2 sc in the next st *. Repeat from * to * around. (24 sc)

Round 7 & 8: 1 sc in each st around. (24 sc)

Round 9: * SC in the first 4 sts, sc dec over the next 2 sts *. Repeat from * to * 3 more times. (20 sc)

Round 10: * SC in the first 3 sts, sc dec over the next 2 sts *. Repeat from * to * 3 more times. (16 sc)

Round 11: * SC in the first 2 sts, sc dec over the next 2 sts *. Repeat from * to * 3 more times. (12 sc)

Attach the eyes and stitch on the smile. Stuff the head with poly-fil before continuing.

Round 12 & 13: SC in each st around. (12 sc)

Round 14: * SC in the first st, sc dec over the next 2 sts *. Repeat 3 more times. (8 sc)

Round 15 & 16: SC DEC 4 times. Fasten off and weave in ends.

Ears
Make 2.

This is worked in rows, not rounds. Start you chain with a somewhat long tail.

Row 1: Ch 4, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Ch 1, turn.

Row 2 – 4: SC in each st across. Ch 1, turn.

Row 5: SC DEC over first 2 sts and last 2 sts. Ch 1, turn.

Row 6: SC across. Ch 1, turn.

Row 7: SC DEC.

Row 8: Sl st down sides, across bottom and back up the other side. Fasten off and weave in end the fastened off end but not the tail at the starting chain.

Stitch these onto the top of the donkeys head. You can use the picture at the top of the pattern for placement ideas.

Body

Round 1: Using the lavender yarn and starting with a magic ring, ch 1, 6 sc in ring. Pull tail to tigthen the ring.

Round 2: 2 sc in each st around. (12 sc)

Round 3: * 1 sc in the 1st st, 2 sc in the next st *. Repeat from * to * around. (18 sc)

Round 4: * 1 sc in each of the first 2 sts, 2 sc in the next st *. Repeat from * to * around. (24 sc)

Round 5: * 1 sc in each of the first 3 sts, 2 sc in the next st *. Repeat from * to * around. (30 sc)

Round 6 – 15: SC in each st around. (30 sc)

Round 16: * SC DEC over the next sts *. Repeat from * to * around.

At this point, stuff the body.

Round 17: * SC in each of the first 3 sts, sc dec over the next 2 sts *. Repeat from * to * 2 more times.

Round 18: * SC in the first st, sc dec over the next 2 sts *. Repeat from * to * 2 more times.

Round 19: SC DEC around. Fasten off and weave in ends.

Stitch the head to the body.

Mane

Ch 10. In the second st from the hook * sc, hdc, dc, trc, dc, gdc, sc in the same st. Sl st to the next st *. Repeat from * to * for the length of the ch. Fasten off leaving a tail long enough to stitch onto the head.

Stitch the mane starting at the top of the head between the ears, continuing down to the neck.

Tail

Ch 13, sl st in 2nd ch from hook and in each st to the end of the ch. Fasten off, leaving tail long enough to stitch the tail to the body.

Tie about four 2-inch pieces of black yarn to the end of the tail that you won't be attaching to the body.

Stitch the tail to the end of the donkey.

Legs

Back legs, make 2.

Round 1: With the black yarn and starting with a magic ring, ch 1, 6 sc in ring. Pull tail to tighten the ring.

Round 2 & 3: SC in each st around. Fasten off the black yarn and join the lavender yarn.

Round 4 – 12: SC in each st around. Fasten off leaving a tail long enough to stitch the leg to the body.

Stitch these underneath the body towards the back.

Front legs, make 2.

Round 1: With the black yarn and starting with a magic ring, ch 1, 6 sc in ring. Pull tail to tighten the ring.

Round 2 & 3: SC in each st around. Fasten off the black yarn and Join the lavender yarn.

Round 4 – 10: SC in each st around. Fasten off leaving a tail long enough to stitch the leg onto the body.

Stitch these underneath the body towards the front.
