Materials:

  •          Red Heart Super Saver in Baby Pink, Aran and Dusty Grey
  •          Crochet Hooks size G & I
  •          Safety Eyes (or small black buttons, but I like the beady eyes)
  •         ¾ inch button
  •          Yarn Needle for weaving in ends
  •          Stitch Marker (Optional)

Abbreviations:

  •         SC = Single Crochet
  •          HDC = Half Double Crochet
  •          HDC2TOG = Half Double Crochet 2 Together
  •          DC = Double Crochet
  •          DC2Tog = Double Crochet 2 Together
  •          CH = Chain
  •          ST = Stitch
  •         SL ST = Slip Stitch

Nose

Starting with baby pink yarn and size G hook:

Round 1: Magic ring, ch 1, 4 sc in ring. (4 SC)

Round 2: 2 SC in each st around, changing to aran yarn at end of round. (8 SC)

Face

Round 3: SC in each st around. (8 SC)

Round 4: *SC in first st, 2 SC in next st.* Repeat from * to * around. (12 SC)

Note: We’re changing to HDC at this point.

Round 5: HDC in each st around. (12 HDC)

Round 6: *HDC in each of first 2 sts, 2 HDC in next st.* Repeat from * to * around. (16 HDC)

Round 7: HDC in each st around. (16 HDC)

Round 8: *HDC in each of first 3 sts, 2 HDC in next st.* Repeat from * to * around. (20 HDC)

Round 9: *HDC in each of first 4 sts, 2 HDC in next st.* Repeat from * to * around, (24 HDC)

Round 10: *HDC in each of first 5 sts, 2 HDC in next st.* Repeat from * to * around. (28 HDC)

Round 11: *HDC in each of the first 6 sts, 2 HDC in next st.* Repeat from * to * around. (32 HDC)

Round 12: *HDC in each of the first 7 sts, 2 HDC in next st.* Repeat from * to * around. (36 HDC)

Round 13: *HDC in each of the first 8 sts, 2 HDC in next st.* Repeat from * to * around. (40 HDC)

Round 14: *HDC in first st, 2 HDC in next st.* Repeat from * to * around. (60 HDC)

Rounds 15 – 17: HDC in each st around. (60 HDC)

At the end of round 17 switch to the dusty grey yarn, size I hook and we’ll be using DC stitches.

Body

Round 18: DC in next 5 sts, semi deep DC next 2 sts (see picture), very deep DC next st (see picture), semi deep DC next 2 sts, DC rest of the way around. (60 DC)

Rounds 19 – 27: DC in each st around. (60 DC)

Round 28: (Pouch round) DC in each of the next 35 sts, ch 10, sk next 10 sts, DC in each of the 15 remaining sts of the round. (50 DC, 10 ch)

Round 29: DC in each of the next 35 sts, 10 DC over ch from previous round, DC in 15 remaining sts. (60 DC)

Round 30: *1 DC in first st, DC2Tog over next two sts.* Repeat from * to * around. (40 DC)

Round 31: DC in each st around. (40 DC)

Round 32: *DC2Tog over next two sts.* Repeat from * to * around. (20 DC)

Round 33:  Repeat round 32. (10 DC)

Cut yarn, leaving long tail. With the yarn needle, weave the yarn tail in and out of the last round of sts, then pull to close the hole. Weave in ends.

 

Legs

Make 4

Starting with the dusty grey yarn and G hook:

Ch 6

Row 1: HDC in 2nd ch from hook and each across. Ch 1, turn. (5 HDC)

Row 2 – 5: HDC in each st across. Change to baby pink yarn at the end of row 5. (5 HDC)

At the end of row 5, ch 2 and turn.

Row 6: 3 DC in first st, sl st in next st, 3 DC next st, sl  st in next st, 3 DC in last st.

Fasten off and weave in ends. Stitch legs to body as shown in photos of finished possum at top of pattern.

 

Tail

Starting with dusty grey yarn and I hook.

Ch 5

Row 1: HDC in 2nd ch from hook and each across. Ch 1, turn. (4 hdc)

Row 2: HDC across, changing to baby pink yarn at last st. Ch 1, turn. (4 hdc)

Row 3 - 35: HDC each st across. Ch 1, turn. (4 hdc)

Row 36: (button hole row) HDC in first st, ch 2, sk next 2 sts, HDC in last st. Ch 1, turn. (2 hdc, 2 ch)

Row 37: HDC in first st, 2 hdc over ch from previous row, hdc in last st. Ch 1, turn. (4 hdc)

Row 38: HDC each st across. Ch 1, turn. (4 hdc)

Row 39: Repeat row 38. (4 hdc)

Row 40: HDC2TOG over first two sts, HDC2TOG over last two sts. Ch 1, turn. (2 hdc)

Row 41: HDC2TOG.

Fasten off, weave in ends. Attach button then sew tail to body.

 

Ears

Make 2

With dusty grey yarn and I hook

Row 1: Magic ring, 6 hdc in ring.  Pull tail of ring to close. Ch 1, turn. (6 hdc)

Row 2: 2 HDC in each st across. Ch 1, turn. (12 hdc)

Row 3: *1 hdc in first st, 2 hdc in next st.* Repeat from * to * across. (18u hdc)

Fasten off, weave in ends. Attach ears to top of head.

All that’s left to do is to attach the safety eyes and hang him/her in your home!

  1. I have a question on round 18? I have never heard of semi deep DC and very deep DC?
    From looking at the pictures it looks like semi deep is 1 row below and very deep is 2 rows below??
