Join carrot yarn.

Row 8-10: Repeat row 7.

Rows 11 & 12: HDC across. Ch 1, turn.

Row 13: Repeat row 7. Ch 1, turn.

Row 14: Repeat row 14 but do not ch 1 at end. Working down sides and bottom, HDC evenly, putting 3 HDC in each corner. Fasten off, weave in all ends EXCEPT the long tail on the beginning ch.

Straw Hair

Cut 20 two inch pieces of the yellow yarn. Tie them around the posts of the face (10 on each face) about an inch down from the top edge. Do not trim "hair" yet.

Attach hat:

Stitch the hats to the faces, slightly overlapping the hair line, using the long tail on the hat.

Now trim the straw hair.

Sew on the button eyes, stitch on the nose and mouth. For the nose, I just made a triangle outline with red yarn and yarn needle and then filled it in.

Flower for girl version:

Yellow yarn

Round 1: 6 HDC in magic ring. Pull tail to tighten ring.

Round 2: *ch 5, Sl st into next st.* Repeat from * to * around.

Round 3: *sl st, sc, HDC, dc, sc* in each ch space around. Fasten off, stitch button to center, and stitch to hat.

Patch for boy version:

make 2 with red yarn

Row 1: ch 4. HDC in 2nd ch and each ch across. Ch 1, turn.

Rows 2&3: HDC across. Fasten off, weave in ends. Stitch to hat.

Sides and bottom

Row 1: join buff yarn in BLO on the face that is just below the hat. HDC around to stitch on the opposite side just below hat. Ch 1, turn.

Rows 2&3: working in both loops, HDC in each st from row 1. Ch 1, turn.

Now, line up other face and Sl st in BLO to join. Fasten off, weave in ends.

Straps

Row 1: Join buff yarn to top of one side of bag and HDC evenly across. (I was able to get 7 HDC across)

Row 2: HDC across. Ch 1, turn.

Continue repeating row 2 until handle is desired length. Once you've reached desired length, Sl st into opposite side. Fasten off, weave in ends.

To help hold the hat up, I stitched the hat to the handle statryong at bottom of hat to about halfway up.
