Toby the Terrible Ear Flap Hat FREE Crochet Pattern

This hat is worked in a continuous round. I like using the magic ring to start but you can also ch 2 and work the first round in the 2^nd ch from the hook.

Materials used:

•    Size H Crochet Hook

•    Worsted Weight Yarn in orange, bright green, red, black, purple (or choose your own colors)

•    Yarn Needle (for weaving in ends)

•    Small amount of poly-fil stuffing

Abbreviations:

•    HDC = Half Double Crochet

•    ST = Stitch

•    CH = Chain

•    Sl St = Slip Stitch

•    Sp = Space

•    HDC DEC = Half Double Crochet Decrease

•    Sk = Skip

•    SC = Single Crochet

0 – 6 Months

With orange yarn

Round 1: Starting with a magic ring, hdc in ring 8 times. Pull tail of ring to close ring. (8 hdc)

Round 2: 2 hdc in each st around. (16 hdc)

Round 3: * 1 hdc in the first st, 2 hdc in the next st. * Repeat from * to * around. (24 hdc)

Round 4: * 1 hdc in the first 2 sts, 2 hdc in the next st. * Repeat from * to * around. (32 hdc)

Round 5: * 1 hdc in the first 3 sts, 2 hdc in the next st. * Repeat from * to * around. (40 hdc)

Round 6 – 15: HDC in each st around. (40 hdc) Do not fasten of IF you are going to add the ear flaps below. If you aren't adding the ear flaps, fasten off and weave in ends.

Ear flaps (optional) Worked in rows

Row 1: Sl St into the next st, ch 2, hdc in the same st as sl st, hdc in next 7 sts. Ch 2, turn. (8 hdc)

Row 2 & 3: HDC in each st across. Ch 2, turn. (8 hdc)

Row 4 - 9: Sk 1^st st, hdc in each st across. Ch 2, turn. (7 hdc)

Row 10: Sk 1^st st, hdc in each st across. Ch 2, turn. ( 1 hdc) Fasten off, weave in ends.

With right side of hat facing you, count 16 sts from right to left and join yarn with sl st. Repeat rows 1

– 10 above.

6 – 12 Months

With orange yarn

Round 1: Starting with a magic ring, hdc 8 in ring. Pull tail of ring to close ring. (8 hdc)

Round 2: 2 hdc in each st around. (16 hdc)

Round 3: * 1 hdc in first st, 2 hdc in next st. * Repeat from * to * around. (24 hdc)

Round 4: * 1 hdc in the first 2 sts, 2 hdc in the next st. * Repeat from * to * around. (32 hdc)

Round 5: * 1 hdc in the first 3 sts, 2 hdc in the next st. * Repeat from * to * around. (40 hdc)

Round 6: * 1 hdc in the first 4 sts, 2 hdc in the next st. * Repeat from * to * around. (48 hdc)

Round 7 – 19: 1 hdc in each st around. (48 hdc) Do not fasten of IF you are going to add the ear flaps below. If you aren't adding the ear flaps, fasten off and weave in ends.

Ear Flaps (optional)

Row 1: Sl st to the next st, ch 2, hdc in the same st as sl st, hdc in the next 9 sts. Ch 2, turn. (10 hdc)

Row 2 & 3: HDC in each st across. Ch 2, turn. (10 hdc)

Rows 4 – 11: Sk 1^st st, hdc in each st across. Ch 2, turn.

Row 12: Sk 1^st st, hdc in each each st across. Fasten off, weave in ends.

With right side of hat facing you, count 16 sts and join yarn with sl st. Repeat rows 1 – 12 above.

12 Months – 3 Years

With orange yarn

Round 1: Starting with a magic ring, hdc 8 times in ring. Pull tail to tighten ring. (8 hdc)

Round 2: 2 hdc in each st around. (16 hdc)

Round 3: * 1 hdc in the first st, 2 hdc in the next st. * Repeat from * to * around. (24 hdc)

Round 4: * 1 hdc in the first 2 sts, 2 hdc in the next st. * Repeat from * to * around. (32 hdc)

Round 5: * 1 hdc in the first 3 sts, 2 hdc in the next st. * Repeat from * to * around. (40 hdc)

Round 6: * 1 hdc in the first 4 sts, 2 hdc in the next st. * Repeat from * to * around. (48 hdc)

Round 7: * 1 hdc in the first 5 sts, 2 hdc in the next st. * Repeat from * to * around. (56 hdc)

Round 8 – 19: HDC in each st around. (56 hdc) Do not fasten of IF you are going to add the ear flaps below. If you aren't adding the ear flaps, fasten off and weave in ends.

Ear Flaps (optional)

Row 1: Sl st into the next st, ch 2, hdc in same st as sl st, hdc in next 11 sts. Ch 2, turn. (12 hdc)

Row 2 & 3: HDC in each st across. (12 hdc)

Row 4 – 13: Sk 1^st st, hdc in each st across.

Row 14: Sk 1^st st, hdc in each st across. Fasten off, weave in ends.

With right side of hat facing you, count 16 sts and join yarn with sl st.

Repeat rows 1 – 14 above.

3 – 10 Years

Round 1: Starting with a magic ring, hdc 8 times in ring. Pull tail to close ring. (8 hdc)

Round 2: 2 hdc in each st around. (16 hdc)

Round 3: * 1 hdc in the first st, 2 hdc in the next st. * Repeat from * to * around. (24 hdc)

Ear Flaps (optional)

Row 1: Sl st in next st, ch 2, hdc in the same st as sl st, hdc in next 13 sts. Ch 2, turn. (14 hdc)

Row 2 & 3: HDC in each st across. Ch 2, turn. (14 hdc)

Rows 4 – 15: Sk 1^st st, hdc across. Ch 2, turn.

Row 16: Sk 1^st st, hdc across. Fasten off, weave in ends.

With right side of hat facing you, count 18 sts and join yarn with sl st. Repeat rows 1 – 16 above.

Teen/Adult

Round 1: Starting with a magic ring, hdc 8 times in ring. Pull tail to close ring. (8 hdc)

Round 2: 2 hdc in each st around. (16 hdc)

Round 3: * 1 hdc in the first st, 2 hdc in the next st. * Repeat from * to * around. (24 hdc)

Round 4: * 1 hdc in the first 2 sts, 2 hdc in the next st. * Repeat from * to * around. (32 hdc)

Round 5: * 1 hdc in the first 3 sts, 2 hdc in the next st. * Repeat from * to * around. (40 hdc)

Round 10 – 28: 1 hdc in each st around. (72 hdc) Do not fasten of IF you are going to add the ear flaps below. If you aren't adding the ear flaps, fasten off and weave in ends.

Ear Flaps (optional)

Row 1: Sl st into the next st, ch 2, hdc in the same st as sl st, hdc in next 15 sts. Ch 2, turn. (16 hdc)

Row 2 & 3: HDC in each st across. Ch 2, turn. (16 hdc)

Rows 4 – 18: Sk 1^st st, hdc in each st across. Ch 2, turn.

Row 19: Sk 1^st st, hdc across. Fasten off, weave in ends.

With right side of hat facing you, count 20 sts and join yarn with sl st. Repeat rows 1 – 19 above.

Face

Same for all sizes.

Eyes

Eye 1:

Round 1: With black yarn and starting with a magic ring, hdc 8 times in ring. Sl st to the first hdc. Fasten off. Pull tail of ring to close ring.

Round 2: Join green yarn. Two hdc in each st around. Sl st to first hdc. Fasten off leaving tail long enough to stitch the eye to the hat. Weave in other ends.

Eye 2:

Round 1: With black yarn and starting with a magic ring, hdc 8 times in ring. Pull tail of ring to close ring.

Round 2: 2 hdc in each st around. Sl st to first hdc. Fasten off and weave in all ends.

Round 3: Join the green yarn. * 1 hdc in 1^st st, 2 hdc in next st. * Repeat from * to * around. Fasten off leaving a tail long enough to stitch the eye to the hat. Weave in other ends.

Stitch eyes to hat.

Mouth:

With black yarn, ch 11.

Row 1: HDC in the 2^nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Fasten off, leaving tail long enough to st to hat. Weave in any other ends.

Stitch mouth to hat.

Tongue:

With red, ch 5.

Row 1: HDC in 2^nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Ch 2, turn.

Row 2: HDC DEC over first 2 and last 2 sts. Ch 2, turn.

Row 3: HDC over the 2 sts. Fasten off leaving tail long enough to stitch to hat. Weave in any other tails.

Stitch to hat just below mouth.

Eyebrow:

With purple, ch 13

Row 1: HDC in 2^nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Fasten off leaving tail long enough to st to hat.

Stitch eyebrow to hat just above the eyes.

Horns:

Make 1 each of purple, green and red.

Round 1: Starting with a magic ring, sc in ring 4 times.

Round 2: 2 sc in each st around.

Round 3: * 1 sc in 1^st st, 2 sc in next st. * Repeat from * to * around.

Round 4 – 9: 1 sc in each st around. Fasten off leaving a tail long enough to stitch to hat. Stuff lightly with poly fil.

Stitch horns to hat.
