Dr Seuss Inspired Baby Afghan

The pattern for the blanket itself is mine. You can find the pattern for the appliqué here: http://crafterguilt.blogspot.com/2013/02/the-cat-in-hat-crochet-applique.html?m=1

Materials used:
2 skeins each of Red Heart Super Saver Yarn in Aruba Sea, Hot Red and White
Size H crochet hook
Yarn needle
Scissors

Abbreviations:
Ch = Chain
HDC = Half Double Crochet
Sp = Space
St = Stitch
Sl st = Slip Stitch

You will make a total of 44 small squares:

14 will consist of the first 2 rounds being hot red, the next round Aruba sea and the last round white.

14 will consist of the first 2 rounds being Aruba Sea, the next round hot red and the last round white.

8 will consist of the first 3 rounds being hot red and the last round white.

8 will consist of the first 3 rounds being Aruba Sea and the last round white.

Small Squares

Round 1: start with magic ring [3 hdc, ch 2] 4 times. Join to first hdc. Ch 2, turn.

Round 2: 2 hdc, ch 2, 3 hdc, ch 2 in ch sp next to turning ch (which acts as first hdc also). *3 hdc, ch 2, 3 hdc, ch 2*. Repeat from * to * for remaining ch sps around. Fasten off, weave in ends.

Round 3: join 2nd color in any of the child so corners from round 3. [3 hdc, ch 2, 3 hdc, ch 2]. * in next ch sp 3 hdc [hdc, ch 2, 3 hdc, ch 2].* Repeat from * to * for each ch so and corner ch sp around. (You will have 4 corner ch sps and 4 "middle" ch sps for this round.)

Round 4: join the white yarn and work this round as you did in round 3 EXCEPT there will be 2 middle ch sps between corners. Fasten off but leave an 18 inch tail for stitching squares together.

Large Square:

The large square is worked just like the small squares except there are a total of 12 rounds: the first 4 are red; the next two are white; the following two are Aruba Sea; the final four are white.

Assembly:

The two bottom rows alternate as follows (going by center colors only. See the picture at the top):

Hot Red, then Aruba Sea. Alternate in this pattern with 7 squared ending with Hot Red.

The row above it alternates the opposite starting and ending with Aruba Sea.

The third row from the bottom starts with the Aruba Sea and white square, then the Hot Red and white square, then the large square, a Hot Red and white square, and the Aruba Sea and white square.

Fourth row from the bottom is hot Red and white, Aruba Sea and white, the large square, Aruba Sea and white, Hot Red and white.

Fifth row from the bottom is like the third row from the bottom.

Sixth row from the bottom is like the fourth row from the bottom.

Seventh row is like the second from bottom row.

And the top row is like the bottom row.

Once you have these all stitched together add the border:

Round 1: join the Aruba Sea in a corner. 3 hdc, ch 2, 3 hdc. Hdc in each st. In each "middle" ch sp work 3 hdc. Continue across and around with hdc in sts, 3 hdc in ch sps, [3 hdc, ch 2, 3 hdc] in corners. Fasten off and weave in ends.

Round 2: join white yarn. 3 hdc in each corner, hdc in each st. Fasten off, weave in ends, and enjoy.
