Cabled Messy Bun Hat Knitting Pattern

Materials:

• Size 7 16” circular & dpn needles
• Cable needle {or anything that compares in size. I use a dpn)
• One skein of worsted weight yarn (I used Red Heart Super Saver in Dove in the picture above)

Abbreviations:

• K = Knit
• P = Purl
• K2tog = Knit 2 together
• P2tog = Purl 2 together
• M1P = Make 1 purl, pick up “bar” between stitches from back to front, purl in front leg of stitch
• C6B = Slip 3 stitches onto cable needle and hold behind work, knit next 3 stitches, then knit stitches off cable needle.

Pattern:

Cast on 96 stitches (just a regular cast on works)

1x1 rib (k1, p1) for 1 ½”

Increase round:

*K6, P1, M1P, P1 * Repeat from * to * around.

*K6, P3 * Repeat from * to * around for a total of 2 rounds.

Cable pattern:

Round 1: * C6B, P3 *. Repeat from * to * around.

Rounds 2 – 8: * K6, P3 *. Repeat from * to * around.

Repeat rounds 1 – 8 twice more, then work rounds 1 – 5 once more. (If the hat needs to be longer, do rounds 1 – 8 again before doing rounds 1 – 5.)

Start decrease rounds, switching to dpns when needed:

Round 1: * K6,p2tog,p1 *. Repeat from * to * around.

Round 2: * K6, p2tog *. Repeat from * to * around.

Round 3: *C6B, p1 *. Repeat from * to * around.

Round 4: * K5, k2tog *. Repeat from * to * around.

Round 5: * K4, k2tog *. Repeat from * to * around.

Round 6: * K3, K2tog *. Repeat from * to * around.

Round 7: * K2, K2tog *. Repeat from * to * around.

Round 8: * K1, K2tog *. Repeat from * to * around.

1x1 rib (k1, p1) from 1 ½ “. Bind off knit wise.
